Niagara Region Waste Management Services have reached out to inform us that construction will be taking place on the Niagara Region Mountain Road landfill site from JULY 13 – 25. The construction will shut down a section of Stage 2 the Laura Secord Legacy Trail that crosses the north end of the closed landfill site during those dates.
This is the section of the Stage 2 trail that crosses Mewburn Road between Firemen’s Park and Niagara College. THIS CLOSURE EFFECTIVELY MAKES STAGE 2 IMPASSABLE FROM FIREMENS’ PARK TO MEWBURN ROAD (see map image in this post, and Stage 2 route map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit…).
Niagara Region staff members walked the site to try and determine if they could clear an alternative trail around the construction, but unfortunately it would still be too close to the excavation and heavy machinery thereby posing and poses a health and safety risk.
The trail remains passable from Mewburn Road to Niagara College.
If you plan to walk the Laura Secord Legacy Trail between July 13 – 25, please be aware of this temporary closure of Stage 2 and plan your hike accordingly.
