Secord in Song: Laura Secord - An Opera

Laura Secord's journey from Queenston Heights to the British outpost at Beaver Dams, a now-famous event in Canadian history, is the focus of this opera. Music Niagara commissioned Canadian composer Mark Richards to write a 90-minute opera on the story of Laura Secord in honour of the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

The opera is to be completed in stages, the first of which included excerpts from Act I for voices and piano, which premiered in July 2012. The second stage was a workshop performance of all three acts, for voices and piano, with some staging, which took place on June 22, 2013. The final stage will be a staged performance for voice and chamber orchestra, originally slated for the summer of 2014 but as yet unproduced.
